The following may sound familiar to a lot of bloggers: You have been blogging for a year or two now in a nice uncrowded little niche. You have been thinking of nice topics to blog about, you have done your research, and your writing is pretty good. But when you look at your web traffic stats, you see that you are still getting only a few hundred visits.
So what should you do in this situation?
If you have not done so already, you should try these five methods that are sure to help your blog traffic:
1. Spend some money on advertising
You do not have to spend all your savings to get decent advertising on the web. Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising like Adwords is pretty flexible when it comes to budgets (you can get good results for no more than 5-10$ a day). Or try to put banner ads on a popular blog or website. (Ideally, that blogger or webmaster is a friend of yours. The more bloggers you know the better your chances.)
2. Tell all of your friends
Do not underestimate the power of your offline social network. Isn´t it ironic that bloggers often tell the online world about their blog but not their friends in real life?
3. Promote via micro-blogs, i.e. Twitter
It is an ongoing discussion whether or not micro-blogging (Twitter) is killing blogging. Either way, do not be afraid of tweeting about your latest blog post if you have a healthy number of followers. The more people you reach - the greater your chances of finding new readers.
4. Alter your style of writing
You certainly do not have to take writing classes, a few simple alterations to your writing may be enough to make it easy to absorb. Focusing a bit more on web usability (knowing your readers and catering specifically to their needs) will also help improving your writing style.
5. Change your blog theme/template
Blog themes are not expected to blow anyone away, but they should facilitate the reading of blog posts. Maybe your blog template is as cluttered as your closet – better change it ASAP. Do you really need all of the widgets? Do you use the right colors to highlight important statements? A change in the appearance of your blog may just be the key to success.
Your blog may not be Boing Boing, the Huffington Post, or Problogger, but trying a lot of different things to get people to notice it can help your voice be heard.
