How to Add Google Analytics to Your Blogger Blog

If you are new to blogging at Blogger.com you might not be aware that tracking and statistics software can easily be linked to your site to provide you with details about your visitors. The process of adding a free tracking program like Google Analytics is a pretty straightforward one. By following the simple instructions below you will gain access to very useful data about the people accessing your site. This will help you grow your site and target your content to meet the needs of your visitors.copyrightjps2010_2

How to Add Google Analytics to Your Blogger Blog

1. Login to Google Analytics at http://google.com/analytics using your Google ID. If for some reason you wish to create a new account you can do so, but be aware that you will lose the advantages of accessing other Google services such as Google Webmaster Tools and Google Adsense without having to login once again.

2. Sign Up to Google Analytics by clicking on the Sign Up button. You will be taken to the Analytics - New Account Signup page. Enter your blog URL, account name, country, and time zone on this page.

URL: You would enter nameofyourblog.blogspot.com or your private domain (if you registered one)

Account Name: It is a good idea to choose a non-specific name such as Tom's Account because this will be the account name for anything from 1 to 100 websites.

Then click on Continue.

3. On the next page you will be prompted to enter your personal details: your name, phone number, and country. Complete these and click on Continue.

4. The final sign up page is the Terms of Agreement screen. Once you agree to these your sign up is complete.

5. Now Google Analytics provides you with a code block of JavaScript that you need to add to your site.

Highlight the block of code, then use the command Ctrl + C to quickly copy the code to the clipboard of your computer. Leave the window open as you are going to return there.

6. In a new tab or window login to your blog at Blogger.com and navigate from the Dashboard to Layout.

7. Layout --> Edit HTML (third from the left after Page Elements and Font and Colors). You are going to be adding a little bit of code to your template, so care needs to be taken not to overwrite any existing code. As a precaution it is advisable to backup your template by choosing to Download Full Template to your computer.

8. To add the code to your template you will need to locate the </body> tag. (Press Ctrl + F and enter </body> in the search bar.) If you choose to look for the code by scrolling down you will find it very near the bottom of the template. You will need to paste the code immediately before the </body> tag.

google-analytics-in-blogger-template

In order to paste the block of code you need to position the cursor in front of the </body> tag and use the command Ctrl + V. Once you are sure the code is positioned correctly within the template click on Save Template. All going well, you have now successfully added Google Analytics to your Blogger blog.

9. Return to Google Analytics. On the Overview page you will see details about your blog such as Reports, Status, Visits etc. If there is a tick in the Status column your Analytics code is working correctly.

If, on the other hand, the Status column contains a yellow triangle symbol with an exclamation mark inside do not despair - it just means that Google has not yet updated the details of your site. Check back in 24 hours. It can take Google a couple of hours from installing the code to actually providing reports, especially if your blog is fairly new.

Once Google Analytics is successfully receiving data about your site, you can begin to make use of the wealth of information available to you.

In Case of Trouble

If after a day the status still displays a yellow triangle the code you inserted may not work correctly. A yellow triangle is displayed when the code is not detected or not verified.

Check your Blogger template to ensure the code block is pasted in the correct position.

How to Track Visitors to Your Blogger Blog

A tracking and statistics program is a necessary tool for anyone interested in building a profitable blog. It will provide you with useful information about how people found your blog, keywords they used to find it, and how long they stayed.

There are quite a number of analytics programs that are available for use with your Blogger blog. Three popular free options are:copyrightjps2010_2

Google Analytics (up to five million page views per month)
Site Meter (starting at 25,000 pageviews)
Stat Counter (up to 500 pageview log/250,000 pageviews/month)

All of them have certain limitations, but each one will give you access to invaluable data about traffic to your Blogger blog. (By the way, I am currently using Stat Counter.)

Main Advantages of Tracking Visitors to Your Site

There are a number of advantages of tracking visitors to your site.

You will get a clear understanding of the demographics of your site traffic including information like geographical location and length of visits. This kind of information is useful for targeting content to meet the specific needs of your visitors´ age groups, lifestyles etc. It will enable you to extend your reach and tap into a larger target audience.

Another advantage is that you will have the ability to identify trends as your site grows. An analytics program will provide a snapshot view of the results of different strategies you might employ, the success of posts and of additions like social bookmarking and networking, stumbles, diggs, and tweets. You will be able to determine the rate of increase in traffic and identify areas where you could improve, for instance by targeting specific keywords.

Without this kind of information it is very hard to gauge the performance of your site. If you are interested in making your site more successful - and I am sure you are - then you will find access to statistical data invaluable in determining where to put your energies. Furthermore, if you should decide to sell your site sometime in the future you will need to provide solid evidence concerning the level of traffic your site receives.

How to Add Analytics to Your Blogger Blog

To add a tracking and statistics service to your Blogger blog you will need to place a block of code into your template. This is a relatively straightforward process. For more information on how to add Google Analytics to Your Blogger blog read my article How to Add Google Analytics to Your Blogger Blog.

In this post I have covered some of the advantages and benefits of adding a statistics and tracking program to your Blogger blog. An analytics program will help you track visitors to your blog and understand traffic trends. Grow your Blogger site today by adding a free tracking and statistics program such as Google Analytics, Site Meter or Stat Counter.

Carrying out this procedure takes only a couple of minutes and is fairly easy since no editing of your Blogger template is required. This tutorial assumes almost no technical knowledge of Blogger and templates and is mostly aimed at people who are just getting started although it is suitable for any Bloggger blogger interested in increasing traffic to their site.copyrightjps2010_2

If you would like to add a Recent Posts feed to your Blogger website please refer to my earlier article How to Add a Recent Posts Feed to a Blogger Blog.

I´ll guide you through the steps of adding a widget to the sidebar of your blog so that your comments feed will be displayed there. As with the Recent Posts feed, the maximum number of items that can be displayed at this point is 5 due to a Blogger limitation. So far, I have not been able to find a hack to increase this level, but should I come across one I will update this post.

How to Add a Recent Comments Feed to the Sidebar of a Blogger Blog

1. Login to Blogger, select the blog you want to add the Recent Comments feed to and navigate to Layout --> Page Elements.

2. Click on Add a Gadget in the sidebar and select the Feed widget.

3. A pop up dialog box will appear requesting you to configure the URL of your feed. Enter the following text into the box:

http://yoursitename.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default

Be sure to substitute yoursitename with the name of your site!

comments feed1

4. If you have entered the address of your comments feed correctly Blogger will retrieve your feed and display a preview in a dialog box. The feed will include links to the last five comments made on your site.

comments feed2

5. Now you might want to delete the name of your blog and type in Recent Comments instead.

6. Click on Save.

7. Click on View Blog to see your new Recent Comments feed in action.

comments feed3

8. If you want to change the feed´s position in the sidebar return to Layout --> Page Elements and use the drag and drop feature to place the widget in a more convenient spot.

For Users of FeedBurner or Similar Services

If you are using a feed delivery service like FeedBurner you need to keep in mind that your default feed URL is being redirected by Blogger.com. In this case you need to enter the FeedBurner address of the feed which is likely to be something along the lines of this:

http://feeds2.feedburner.com/Comments/YourSiteName

Notice how FeedBurner capitalizes the name of your blog. Check the exact address at FeedBurner if you are not absolutely sure of the feed address. How to Burn Blogger RSS Feeds at Feedburner

Blogger RSS Feeds and Why You Should Burn Them at Feedburner

This post is about Blogger (Blogspot) RSS feeds and about the benefits of burning your Blogger feeds at Feedburner.

What are RSS Feeds?

Your Blogger feeds (in most cases RSS and Atom) are a means of distributing the content of your blog to the world. Feeds make it possible to maximise exposure of your blog's content beyond a few visitors browsing your blog. Feeds can be subscribed to via web portals, news readers, or email. Feeds allow your blog content to be packaged into all sorts of widgets and gadgets and mobile devices that can be displayed just about anywhere.copyrightjps2010_2

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary) and is a standardized web format used to create a document containing your blog posts, blog comments, or any other content on your blog you choose (images, music, videos, podcasts, etc). As Blogger offers built in RSS feeds, everytime you publish a post Blogger automatically adds your post to the default feeds. How much of your Blogger post is displayed in your feed depends on whether you have chosen to allow feeds in full or short format. To check and/or change this setting in Blogger, navigate to Settings --> Site Feeds of your blog.

Blogger automatically produces your blog´s feed in both Atom and RSS. RSS is rapidly becoming the preferred format for feeds (for instance, a lot of blog directories ask users to provide the URL of their RSS feed). Both Atom and RSS were developed to enable people to receive automatic updates of their favorite blogs and websites. While the formats are different they do pretty much the same job: they put out updated content from your blog in a format that can be easily read in feed readers.

The URL of Default Blogger Feeds

a) Default Blogger Post Feeds

Atom 1.0:
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

RSS 2.0:
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

b) Default Blogger Comments Feeds

Atom 1.0:
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default

RSS 2.0:
http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=rss

c) Default Blogger Label-Specific Feeds

Atom 1.0:
http://blogname.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default/-/labelname

RSS 2.0:
http://blogname.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=rss/-/labelname

Encourage Visitors to Subscribe to Your Blogger Feeds

rss feeds subscribe

Whenever you see the familiar orange icon clip_image002 on a website it denotes a RSS feed. By adding this RSS icon to your Blogger blog and setting up a link to the feed of posts or other content of your blog you enable visitors to view your feed on click. If you have added the Subscription Links widget via Layout --> Page Elements --> Add a Gadget visitors are given the option to subscribe to both your posts and comment feeds in a reader like Google Reader, My Yahoo or Bloglines. Alternatively, you can burn your blog feeds using a free feedburning service like Feedburner.

Feed Readers are an Easy and Convenient Means for Readers to Keep Up-to-date

Your readers do not have to worry about manually saving your blog to their browser favorites anymore, as Atom and RSS feeds make it easy to subscribe to a feed reader instead. Rather than manually checking back to your site and trying to manage a bunch of bookmarks your visitors can choose to subscribe in a reader. Subscribing in a reader means they will automatically get the latest content without fear of missing any new entries.

Burning Blog Feeds at Feedburner

Burning your feeds with a feed burning service like Feedburner is one of the easiest ways to get subscriptions to your blog. Since the Feedburner service is now owned by Google you can can access it directly from your Google account. If you consider using Google AdSense as a means of monetizing your feeds you should most definitely burn said feeds. For more information about burning the feed of your Blogger blog at Feedburner please read my article How to Burn Blogger RSS Feeds at Feedburner.

feedburner 1

By burning the feeds of your blog at Feedburner you will be redirecting the Blogger default feeds to the new Feedburner feeds. By placing a link to your blog's feed you will give visitors instant access to your feed. If, for instance, there currently are 20 posts in your posts feed they will be able to browse all of them in chronological order complete with images, but without videos, etc.

If you happen to have a lot of articles in one particular group you can choose to burn label feeds as well. For instance, if you blog about fishing you might choose to have separate feeds for deep sea fishing and freshwater fishing.

Visitors also have the option to subscribe to any of your burned feeds in a variety of feed reader applications such as Google Reader, My Yahoo, Netvibes, and Bloglines. The advantage to the visitor of subscribing in a reader is that they do not have to keep visiting your blog to keep up with your latest posts. Instead they can read the most recent posts of all their favourite blogs from their reader which collects all their feed subscriptions into one central place.

rss feeds subscribe reader 2

The option to get updates via a web-based feed reader is becoming increasingly popular with visitors. Even though it means that the visitor may not be returning to your blog, your feeds nevertheless extend your blog's reach. Feedburner can provide accurate statistics about the number of subscribers to your feed as well as the type of reader they are using.

clip_image001[4]You can also place a Feedburner Feed Count button on your blog which displays the number of current subscribers. Adding a Feedburner Feed Count button is not a bad idea if your blog is attracting a sizeable readership. The purpose of adding such a button is not so much to brag about your success (although it is gratifying to see the number of readers climbing) but to lend more credibility to your blog.

Reasons for Burning a Blogger Feed at Feedburner

1. Feedburner Provides Tracking Statistics of Subscribers

There are many good reasons to burn the feeds of your blog at Feedburner, but the main one is the possibility to track your feeds to gain a better understanding of your blog's audience. Blog publishers who redirect their feeds can monitor their (hopefully!) growing readership.

It is useful to know how many people are opening and reading your feeds and how they are being used. Feedburner provides an easy method of tracking feeds that otherwise would be difficult to track. By redirecting your Blogger default feed to FeedBurner, important feed statistics such as the total number of subscribers, feed readers (aggregators) used, live hits, items used, uncommon uses, item views, item link clicks, and item enclosure downloads for podcast can be recorded and analysed.

2. Feedburner Enables You to Reach a Wider Audience

Feedburner is one of the best options when it comes to attracting more readers to your blog and plugging into a wider network of internet users than you might have on your own account.

3. Feedburner Offers Improved Presentation of Your Blog Feed

Another advantage of Feedburner is that it allows for clean visual formatting of your RSS feed for improved browser friendliness and presentation. Once burned, your feed will be more visually pleasing to readers. Improved presentation of your RSS feed is one of the best reasons to begin redirecting your blog feed to Feedburner. Moreover, your readers can select the reader they would like to use directly from the feed.

4. Feedburner Provides a Wide Range of Services

By burning your blog feeds at Feedburner you get access to a wide range of services like Podcasting and the choice and flexibility of participating in the Feedburner Ad Network. Feedburner allows you to easily analyse, publicize, optimize, and monetize your feed. Feed burning allows readers to subscribe regardless of what feed reader they are using.

This post has discussed Blogger RSS feeds and has outlined some of the benefits of burning your Blogger feeds at Feedburner. For instructions on burning your Blogger RSS feed at Feedburner please read my tutorial entitled How to Burn Blogger RSS Feeds at Feedburner.
