18 Highly Effective SEO Techniques

Proper Search Engine Optimization (also known as SEO) has quickly become one of the most popular topics of conversation among bloggers, website owners and entrepreneurs. The difference between having a successful blog or website, and hosting a flop, is often dependent upon whether or not you have incorporated the right keywords and phrases into your webpages.

Learning proper SEO techniques can seem like a daunting task, especially to those who are not familiar with the concept. The following list offers 18 simple SEO techniques you should keep in mind when developing and marketing your blog, website, or online business.

seo-search-engine-optimization-techniques 1. Make sure your website is designed with your search engine optimization needs in mind. Search engines look for text, not flashy graphics and cool layouts. The trendiest web designs will mean nothing if no one is able to find your site.

2. Every page of your website should have a title tag that describes either your site or the content of the page. Be sure the text includes SEO-type keywords instead of the name of your website. Unless happen to be incredibly popular (but then you probably won´t have to think about SEO), no one is going to be looking for you by searching for your name. People will most likely search for a product or service and the keywords you use will lead them to your site.

3. When designing your website, be sure to avoid too many drop-down menus, confusing image maps, and excessive use of images. If you need to incorporate any of these methods, be sure to include plenty of text links for the search engine spiders to find and identify. Without these links the search engines will not pick up your site information.

4. Consider sticking to a general rule, or whether or not your website address includes or excludes the www prefix. If you choose to use the www version of your website, make sure the non-www version directs users back to the one you use. Make sure you use your preferred version (http://www.mydomain.com or http://mydomain.com) every time you place a link to your site on the web. Do not use both!

5. It does not matter what type of website extension you use (for instance: .html, .htm, .asp, .php). Search engines do not look at the web extension and it will not have any impact at all on search results or ranking.

6. Every page on your website should include a link to your home page and your sitemap. Make sure every link is exactly the same. Home page links should go directly to your domain (http://www.mydomain.com). Make sure your internal links do not include the additional /index.html or .php text as it is not needed (ie. http://www.mydomain.com/index.html).

7. Are you sharing a server with other websites? If so, you will want to conduct a black-list check to make sure you are not sharing a proxy with someone who has been banned by search engines in the past. Being on the same server as a website with a poor reputation may damage yours.

8. You will hear the same phrase over and over again: Content is king. It is imperative for your blog or website to have fresh, unique, and quality content that is updated on a regular basis. Be sure to include your primary keyword phrase within the body of the content!

9. People are more likely to insert a phrase instead of a single word when conducting internet searches. If your business has a physical location, incorporate the name of your city into the text as well. For example, you might use "our Pittsburgh location" instead of "our location". Including your city name will improve the chances of your site being seen in location searches.

10. If the information on your website does not change regularly, or remains static, you might want to consider starting a blog. Search engine spiders are always looking for fresh content. Use your blog as an advertising tool and link back to your website within each and every post.

11. Write as naturally as possible. The worst thing you can do is try to cram a million keywords into a single article or blog entry, making it messy and difficult to read. Search engines are able to determine whether or not your text is logical and they will ignore content with ridiculously high keyword density.

12. Building links to your website is essential to its success. As a matter of fact, links are like the queen to complement the king, your fresh content. Choose a keyword phrase and network with other websites, asking them to place links on their pages. Do not hurt your ranking by having non-related websites place haphazard links. While it may seem great to gather hundreds or thousands of backlinks, you are far better off limiting your links to related websites. Ten or twenty relevant links stand a better chance than hundreds of irrelevant links.

13. Links within your website should always be built with keyword phrases. Try to avoid using generic anchor text such as "click here" or "follow this link" as much as possible.

14. Do not place a list of links on your website. Always place a link within at least two to three lines of related content. The better your description, the more likely it is someone will click on the link.

15. Do not limit your keyword(s) or phrase(s) to text links. You should also incorporate your keywords into your image alt tag and domain name, either as part of the name itself or contained within the description.

16. Try to avoid using frames, Ajax, and Flash as much as possible. None of these functions are keyword or search engine friendly and will hurt your SEO results. And they decrease the loading speed of your site.

17. Before your blog or website can be found by the search engine spiders, it needs to be indexed. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing have regular submission forms, but it can take days or weeks for your form to be processed. Having a highly ranked blog or website place a link to your site is a sure-fire way to have your site indexed quickly.

18. No matter what you hear, do not be overly concerned with the Google PageRank of your blog or website. A website that is properly developed and contains good content can be more successful than a website with higher PageRank.

In this post I have introduced you to 18 highly effective search engine optimization techniques. If you want to make your blog or website more successful you should start applying them a.s.a.p.

Good luck!

15 Important Design Tips for Your Blog or Website

In this post I shall give you 15 important and highly effective blog/website design tips that you might not be aware of or have overlooked. Consider taking advantage of them if you have not already done so...

1. Custom 404 Pages

Create a custom 404 web page, so that any time your website visitor mistypes or misspells a URL on your site, he or she will still be provided with navigation options for your site (instead of just getting a "Page Not Found" error message, which is neither friendly nor helpful).

2. Redirect Non-www. to www.

Website visitors will often leave out the "www." portion when they type a URL or link to your website. Set the website up so that it automatically redirects any non-www version of your domain urls (http://domain. com) to the www version (http://www.domain. com) of your website. For a tutorial on how to do this visit www.seobook.com (only works on websites, not on blogs).

web-design 3. Properly Sized Graphics

Size and define all graphics and images on your web pages properly and correctly. Web pages will load quicker if the graphics contained on each page are properly defined so they do not require the web browser to re-size them. Properly sized and defined images can reduce the web browser workload and speed up the page loading time. Also, include a good alt definition or name for each picture and graphic.

4. Include RSS Auto-Discovery

If you provide an RSS feed for any content on your website, be sure to include auto-discovery code in the header of your website. This will allow many browsers and RSS readers to automatically detect the presence of an RSS feed and alert the visitor that it is available.

5. Favicon

Add a Favicon (favorite icon) to your website, so that your company or product logo appears in the URL box. This icon will also show up in a bookmark list, and gives the blog or website an added level of professionalism.Please read my post on how to add a favicon to your Blogger blog.

6. Alternate Domains

Domain names are relatively inexpensive, so you should register multiple domain versions and extensions in order to protect your brand. The varied domains should be parked on the main website, simply to prevent others from obtaining them. Registering alternate domain versions and extensions will help protect your brand.

7. Consistent Navigation

Navigation should remain consistent throughout a website. As a visitor moves through the website, the navigation bar should remain in the same place on each page. This will make it easier for visitors to navigate your website, and become more comfortable as they move from page to page.

8. Home Leads Home

The main graphic, company logo, or "header" at the top of the site should be included on every page in the site, and should always return the visitor to the home page of the website. This has become a web standard, and most visitors now expect to return to the main page of the site simply by clicking on the main top graphic from any page within the site.

9. Copyright Notice

Include a copyright notice on the bottom of each page of your the website (or each blog post as well as its feed), and keep it current! It may seem trivial, but an out-of-date copyright notice can send a message to your visitors that the blog or website and its content may be out-of-date as well.

10. Meaningful File Names

Use meaningful file names for any files, graphics, and web pages. Many search engines look at file names as part of their search algorithm, and using keywords in file names may help to improve search engine rankings.

11. Hyphens vs Underscores

When naming files and webpages, use hyphens (i.e.: web-page.html) rather than underscores (i.e. web_page.html) for the file names. It is much easier for search engines to separate and index the keywords when hyphens are used.

12. ALT Tags

Use ALT tags to describe what images represent on web pages. ALT tags not only assist visually-impaired visitors in knowing what the images are, but they also help with search engine ranking.

13. Spell Check

Use a spell-check feature on the text of all web pages in a website. A website that contains mistyped or misspelled words just shouts "unprofessional". Take the extra few minutes necessary to check the spelling of text on each page of your website.

14. Test

After making changes to your blog or website, test it! Many times, bloggers or webmasters will upload changes, confident in their abilities, only to discover later on that in their attempt to fix one thing, they have "broken" something someplace else. Make testing a habit after implementing even the most minor changes!

15. Keep It Simple

Simple is good. Eliminate all unnecessary clutter and distractions from your blog/website and navigation menu.

Good luck!

Make Link Building Easier With These 5 Simple Tips

As online businesses and publishers continue to warm up to the idea of search engine optimization (SEO), link building has taken center stage as it traditionaly is the most time consuming and crucial part of any internet marketing and/ or publicity strategy. Link building services are the most commonly outsourced aspect of SEO. This process involves finding qualified and thematically relevant one-way linking partners who will link back to your blog or website.copyrightjps2010_2

At first glance this sounds easy and there are hundreds and hundreds of automated products out there that claim to add thousands, in some cases even tens of thaousands, of back links virtually overnight. Unfortunately, the truth is there are no short cuts in cultivating authoritative backlinks for a blog or website. Link building companies spend many hours building links by hand in order to get the best results. Spammy automated products in most cases do not cultivate valuable links and tend to do more harm than good. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you get started.

increase-backlinks 1. Know Which Keywords You Are Targeting

Link building strategies are an extension of your current SEO practice, if you already have any. You will want to reference the list of keywords you have selected to optimize your site. Make sure that the anchor text of the link has the keyword you are targeting. For example, if you are targeting the keyword "sports cars" you will want to place that keyword in the anchor text of the link. I have seen many companies go after links by using their company name. Although this does boost link popularity it fails to increase popularity for a specific keyword and therefore can be seen as a failed attempt.

2. Develop a Sound Link Building Strategy

There are quite a number of strategies link building companies use to source qualified backlinks to their clients. The most tedious but often most rewarding method is manual linking requests also known as "cherry picking". This method allows you to obtain exceptionally qualified links which can really help boost your position in the search engine results pages (SERPS). A good place to start with manual link building is to look at your suppliers, vendors, clients, related organizations or associations, thematically related blogs, online communtities and more.

Besides manual link requests other often used tactics include:

  • Directory submission (Dmoz, Yahoo Directory, BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog, etc.)
  • Article submission (ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com)
  • Optimized press releases (PRWeb.com), expensive!
  • Social media outlets (FaceBook, Linked In, Twitter)
  • Bookmarking sites (Digg, Reddit, Furl, StumbleUpon)
  • Blogs (niche blogs)
  • Forums (niche forums)
  • Classifieds (niche classifieds)

3. Identify Thematically Relevant and Authoritative Linking Sources

Search engines see links as votes of confidence for a site. The more relevant and authoritative the blog or website, the more consideration is given to the link and the subsequent keyword in the anchor text. It really pays off to focus on the quality of your links rather than the quantity. It is also important for your link building to look natural and not an attempt to deceive search engine spiders in search of links. Try looking for sites within your industry or related to the topic of your site rather than general, unrelated sites to get links from.

A good example of this would be content creation and distribution. Try creating content on a relevant subject of which you can speak authoritatively. For instance, a SEO company writing a short article on 10 simple ways companies can start link building and placing it on an authoritative, industry relevant site like SiteProNews. Remember, before placing a link on a site (or making a request), ask yourself three questions:

       1. Does a link to my website belong here (does it look natural)?

       2. Is the site relevant and authoritative?

       3. Is there any benefit to my potential visitors/readers/customers?

And take a close look at the on-site attributes of the linking site.

4. Determine Where Your Link Will Reside

Once you have found a potential linking partner that represents the overall quality and thematic authority that your site deserves you will need to see where your link will appear.

links Here are a couple guidelines that you should look for when placing links on a site. Try to get your links no more than a few clicks away from the homepage. The page must be thematically relevant and recently cached by Google's search engine (this lets you know that the page has been indexed by Google). You should also take a look at the number of external (outbound) links leaving that page. The number of external links should be kept below 50, otherwise it will dilute the effect of the page. Lastly, look at the page the link will be placed on. For some sites this is harder to control, but if you have the option you should know where the most valuable locations are. Try to get your links in line with thematically relevant content, like an article or blog post, if possible. I have found this produces some of the best results. Try to avoid placing your links within a "sponsored" or advertisers section that runs throughout the entire site. Also avoid footer links - rumor has it Google has devalued links buried in the footer of the site. Links placed at the top of the page or inserted into the site's navigation also tend to do quite well. Bottom line is that your links need to look like they belong and provide value to the user and the site it is published on.

5. Be Aware of "No-Follow" Links

Within the last couple of years Google developed the dreaded concept of the "no-follow" link. The "no-follow" code is inserted into your link and instructs the Google and every other spider to ignore it. The "no-follow" link can be seen used most commonly in blog comments and forum posts. This initiative was set forth to combat spam and automated linking mechanisms that were desingned to place links automatically on blog comments and forum posts.

There are a lot of SEO professionals who will only place a link if it is a "do-follow" link, meaning it does not have the "no-follow" attribute. Others disagree with the aforementioned notion, especially when the link in question is on a highly trafficked authority site. If it makes sense for the link to be there, then add your link. Even though Google will not give you any credít for it, it will be seen by thousands of people who may visit your site and link to you themselves because your site is highly relevant. This concept is called indirect link building. You are promoting your site to potential linking partners.

Link building is a very time consuming process and link building companies spend a lot of time researching, testing and improving their techniques. Link building services are available to anyone who does not have enough time for manual link building. The bottom line is that anyone can link build and move their site up the SERPS, thereby attracting more traffic.

Get More Traffic with these 10 Important Inbound Links

This post is meant as a reminder that you should not for one minute overlook your inbound linking strategy as you think about search engine optimization for your blog or website. An inbound link (a.k.a. backlink) is a hyperlink back to your site from another website. The one constant and reliable strategy in search engine optimization is that sites with a number of high quality backlinks rank higher in the search engine results pages.copyrightjps2010_2

Why are inbound links so important?

They are important because they can:

• bring potential customers to your site when they click on the link

• boost the number of visitors to your website

• dramatically improve your search engine rankings

Even though there are a lot of software packages on the market that help automate the linking process, use them sparingly, if at all. Currently the only linking strategy that guarantees success (aside from creating useful content that will encourage inbound links) is manually creating the links. That is a hard fact to swallow, not to mention a lot of work.

Here are the 10 most important inbound links you must try to get:

1. Directory Links

Directories are indexes of blogs and other online sites, typically organized by category. Links back to your site from directories like Yahoo Directory and DMOZ.org are very valuable. Unfortunately, they are hard to get. DMOZ.org is edited by human editors, and while it is free, it may take awhile for your site to be added (up to a yaer, depending on the category). Getting added to Yahoo's Directory costs $299/year (!).

2. Press Releases

If you are writing press releases, make sure they are optimized for keywords that someone would use to find a business or website like yours and include links back to your site, as well. Once written, you can have your press release distributed through a service like PRWeb.com (from $80 per press release), which will create links from high traffic news sites back to your site.

3. Article Directories

Writing and distributing articles through high traffic article directories, like EzineArticles. com, is a great way to get valuable inbound links from a high traffic site. By crafting an effective resource box at the close of your article, you can drive traffic to your site!

4. Social Bookmarking

Similar to web browser bookmarks, social bookmarking sites store individual pages (bookmarks) online and allows users to tag (using keywords), organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources as well as share them with others. If you bookmark your content on these sites (for instance Digg.com, Reddit.com, Del.icio.us. com, StumbleUpon), you get a link from the service. By producing content that your readers love and then bookmark to their friends, the link increases in SEO value.

5. Blog Comments

To find blog posts on which to comment, you can use blog-specific search engines like Google Blog Search. Make sure these are blogs read by your target audience, not your colleagues, be they webmasters, fellow marketers, etc. Brand yourself by always using the same name and remember to link back to your site (signature tolls are big help). Always leave a comment that adds to the conversation that is happening within the comments.

6. Social Media

Not so long ago, Google started to index your Twitter updates and your social networking profiles. Add that to Web 2.0 hubsites like Scribd or HubPage and you have got the option of creating huge numbers of inbound links in a very short period of time.

7. Blog/Podcast Syndication

Submitting the RSS feed of your blog and podcast to syndication services will give you a link back to your site. In some cases, every time you publish a new blog post, the post itself will also get a link.

8. Video Syndication

YouTube is among the most visited sites online, and the number of sites that syndicate videos is growing each day. These sites often allow you to link to your site either in the description of your video or on your profile page, or both.

9. .EDU and .GOV Links

Search engines place a great deal of credibility in government and education websites, and the links carry a great deal of weight. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get inbound links from these sites.

10. Internal Links

Remember, if you have more than one website, or a website and a blog, be sure to link one to the other. You can do this by linking one article to other related articles, or link to categories or archives of information. Wikipedia is king when it comes to internal linking.

Creating a sound inbound linking strategy is a key component of your search engine optimization efforts. Try a few or all of the strategies listed above and see how your traffic and rankings soar.

Good luck!

How to Add a Menu Bar with CSS Definitions

Menu bars are the basic navigation tools of a website. They allow the visitors or users of a website to conveniently navigate from one page to another. Without the menu bar or any other navigation links, all the contents of a website have to be placed on the front page. This would be tantamount to printing a whole book as one long scroll rather than the more practical leaf-page format. The menu bar is comparable to the index or table of contents of a book. It allows the readers to find the particular page or contents they are looking for. Thus, the need for scanning the whole book is eliminated.

Even blogs may need menu bars for easy navigation. The menu bar leads to the different resources and information found on the blogsite. A typical menu bar for a blog couls look like this:

HOME||CHAT||VIDEOS||PICS||BLOGROLL||ABOUT||CONTENTS

While it is possible to create a menu bar by using simple text links, there is another, maybe even better way of creating a Blogger menu bar through the use of CSS definitions. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) adds text effects to the menu bar. In my previous post on this topic I have shown you the simple method that does not require you to change the CSS of your Blogger template. In this post I will discuss themore complicated method that utilizes CSS definitions. (For an example of a Blogger menu bar with CSS definitions, please visit: Much Ado About Nothing.)

How to Create a Menu Bar for Your Blogger Blog

1. Create a new header page element. To do this, please refer to my post How to Add New Header and Crosscol Elements.

2. Find the HTML section that is shown below and add the codes that are highlighted in red:

<b:section class='menubar' id='menubar' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='yes'>
<b:widget id='LinkList2' locked='true' title='Menubar' type='LinkList'/>
</b:section>

<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='no'>
<b:widget id='Header1' locked='false' title='Beautiful Beta (Header)' type='Header'/>
</b:section>

3. In the style sheet section of your template, add these CSS codes:

#menubar h2 {display:none;}
#menubar ul {
list-style: none;
}
#menubar li {
float: left;
}
#menubar a:link, #menubar a:visited, #menubar a:hover {
padding: 5px;
display: block;
color: $headerTextColor;
}
#menubar a:hover {
background-color: $headerCornersColor;
}

4. Save the template and go to the Page Elements tab. You will notice that a new page element box has been added above the header title. Click the Add a Page Element link and choose Link List as the new page element. You can now start linking pages from your blog posts or from other sites.

Good luck!

How to Add A Menu Bar to Your Blogger Blog

In this post I´ll show you how you can add a menu bar to your Blogger blog in a matter of minutes. While you may find a number of methods of adding a horizontal menu bar to your blog on the web, the one I am going to guide you through is quite straightforward and does not involve any modification of the style sheet (CSS) of your Blogger template. A menu bar is actually just a horizontal link list found above, inside or right below the header area. For instance, the menu bar may contain links to a profile page or to an interactive page for games or embedded chat rooms or... These pages could be separate posts within your site or external links. As you may remember, every blog post that you make has its own unique page URL. Simply click the title of the specific post you want to link to in order to display its URL address.

How to add a menu bar to your Blogger blog

As promised, here is the simple guide you can follow to create a menu bar above the header of your blog:

1. Sign in to Blogger. Go to Layout --> Edit HTML, then check the box that says "Expand Widget Templates".

2. Click on Download Full Template to create a backup of your template. (Programs like Notepad or Word are a good choice for this kind of task.) You may also use the downloaded document to edit the HTML codes of your template.

3. Locate the following section in the HTML template of your blog (Ctrl + F, then copy and paste the line into the search bar) :

<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='no'>

4. Change the maxwidgets to "2" and change the showaddelement to "yes". Save your template and view the Page Elements tab of the template. You will notice an additional Page Element box above the Header box.

5. Click on Add a Page Element in the new Page Element box above the Header box. Select the add text option.

6. Type the names of links that you want to appear on your menu bar. Type these names as one line with verical separators. For instance, you may type the following:

HOME|VIDEOS|PICTURES|ABOUT ME

7. Now comes the trickiest part. You must link each link name to a particular post - or even better, a specific label - on your blog. First, go to that particular post page by clicking the title of the post. For instance, if you have a post about a short autobiographical profile, copy the URL address of this particular link. You will use this URL address to create a link for the "ABOUT ME".

8. Here are the codes that you should use to link each link name on your menu bar: and . You have to enclose each link name inside these codes to create specific links. You simply have to specify the url address.

I shall show you another method of creating a menu bar that requires the modification of the CSS style sheet in an upcoming post. For now, the method that I have explained to you in this post should be enough for you to get started.

Good luck!

How to Resize YouTube Videos to Fit the Layout of Your Blog

Now that YouTube has decided to offer full HD, the minimum size for many embedable videos has risen to 560*340. This poses a problem for a lot of bloggers, especially if they use three-column templates, because the content column is to small for the YouTube player and part of the video gets cut of, or you have an unsightly overhang.

Of course, you could change your template to one with a wider post column, but there is a simpler solution: resizing the YouTube videos to fit the layout of your blog.

Surprisingly, the amount of times I have seen this done can be counted on the fingers of one hand - a surprise, considering how easy it is to resize YouTube videos, Google videos, Revver videos, etc. to fit the layout of blogs and websites. (Take a look at what happens if you do not resize.)copyrightjps2010_2

How to Resize YouTube Videos to Fit the Layout of Your Blog

1. Grab the embeddable Flash Player code for your desired video and look for all instances of width=”560″ height=”340″ (or any other measurements you might have chosen) within that code.

2. Change the height and width attributes while preserving the H/W Ratio (aspect ratio) so the video does not become distorted. Since I am not the world´s best mathematician, I simply used a photo editing program to make a 560 wide by 340 high blank image, then used its built-in resizing tool to make the width the same as my blog’s content column. (The mathematical formula can be found at the end of this post.)

3. That blog´s content column happens to be 480px wide, so I changed the width and height attributes of the embedded players code to reflect the new height and width.

4. Then I published it and the video magically shows up filling out the entire width of the column with no big white space area on one side and no overhang.

Using the same method, you can also shrink the video players down so they fit into side columns of blogs and websites. In fact, in a side project I am currently developing, I have set up a sideblog in a 240px wide right column with several shrunken video players embedded that looks just awesome.

I come across a lot of major sites, like news sites, huge gadget and tech blogs, etc. that frequently post videos that look like they are just sitting “out there” alone in a vast sea of “Duh, I don’t know what to do with this code except cutting and pasting it” and it looks really odd, not to mention unprofessional, in my opinion.

Let´s hope these guys go the extra mile and do the math, or use a resizing tool to make their blogs look a bit better and more professional.

As promised, the mathematical formula:

original width   =  new width
original height     new height

Thus

560  =  460
340       h

Transposing, we get

h  = 460 x 340 = 279,28
           560

This means that 279 is the right width if you want to keep the aspect ratio of the original YouTube video.

Good luck!

How to Redirect Visitors from Your Blogger Blog to Another Blog or Website

Maybe you are familiar with the following problem: You are in the process of moving from an established blog to another blog/website when it occurs to you that you will probably lose quite a bit of your existing traffic. What could you do about this? The simplest solution would be to publish a final post informing your visitors of the move. (Don´t forget to include a link!)

A far better method would be to automatically redirect all visitors from your old blog to the new one. I am going to show you a simple way to do this. You only need to add a meta tag to the template of your old blog, that is all.

How to Redirect Traffic from Your Blogger Blog to a New or Different Site

Just follow these three easy steps:

1. Sign in to your Blogger Dashboard --> Layout --> Edit HTML.

2. Now it is time to edit the content of the template of your old blog. Paste the following code into your template just below the
tag:

//> Page Elements --> Add a Gadget. Enter the URL of the default feed of your site. It will be:

http://yoursitename.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

Enter ‘Recent Posts’ in the title and then Save. For more information on adding a posts feed widget to a sidebar please refer to my article How to Add a Recent Posts Feed to a Blogger Blog.

You can do the same for comments if you wish to have a list of recent comments displayed in your sidebar. In this case you need to enter:

http://yoursitename.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default

For a more in depth coverage about adding a comments feed to your sidebar please see my article How to Add a Recent Comments Feed to the Sidebar of a Blogger Blog.

Make sure you set up your site feeds to show the full text. To check this navigate to Settings --> Site Feeds and select Yes from the dropdown box for all three feeds.

You should also consider having a feed specifically for a popular label if it contains 20 or more posts.

9. Optimize Your Use of Images

Chances are you – like most bloggers – do not think a whole lot about images when you insert them into your posts, but images can be optimized by careful use of filenames and the alt attribute. When naming images avoid long names. Instead give your images distinctive filenames rather than something generic like 00052.jpg which obviously has no meaning.

The alt attribute allows you to specify what text is displayed when a visitor's mouse hovers over an image. The alt attribute also gets displayed if the image is not available for some reason. By optimizing your alt attributes you are increasing the likelihood of your images appearing in Google Image Searches.

Optimizing thealt attributes of your pictures is easy. Every time you insert an image into a post look for the alt attribute which will be empty by default:

style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 122px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/abcdeefgBxA/4560/sidebar-add-this-bookmark-button.JPG" border="0" />

Fill in the alt attribute with a useful description of your image:

style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 122px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="Eblogger Tricks Sidebar Showing Recent Comments Widget” src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/abcdeefgBxA/4560/sidebar-add-this-bookmark-button.JPG" border="0" />

Note: If the desired text does not appear after changing the alt attribute you need to change the title attribute as well. Just copy the text you used in the alt space into the title space.

If you happen to use a publishing tool like Windows Live Writer you can insert the alt text in the sidebar (picture menu: advanced) after clicking on the picture.

Depending on the subject of your blog or website you can gain a lot of traffic from the images you post on your site. The more unique the content of your site the greater the likelihood that your traffic will stem from images. Without going overboard ensure you have a healthy mix of images to support your articles.

10. Take Advantage of Web Analytics Services

Having implemented some strategies to improve crawling and indexing of your site by the major search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing you might want to see how much impact these changes have had on the traffic reaching your site. Web Analytics programs are a valuable tool for gaining insight into visitor behaviour and trends. The kind of information that a program like Google Analytics will provide is:

  • how users reach and behave on your site
  • the most popular content on your site
  • the impact of the optimizations you make to your site (e.g. by how much did changing the order of title tags improve traffic from search engines?)
